ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1978, MIGNONNE was Taeko Ohnuki’s third solo album and her first after moving to RCA, placing her at an important transition between the jazz-fusion sophistication of SUNSHOWER and the more European-oriented work that followed. The album brings together an extraordinary studio cast, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, Shigeru Suzuki, Tsugutoshi Goto, Tatsuo Hayashi, and others. Sakamoto arranged several of its most enduring songs, including “4:00 A.M.,” whose combination of restless harmony, spacious keyboards, and late-night rhythm later made it one of Ohnuki’s most internationally rediscovered tracks. Elsewhere, “Yokogao,” “Tasogare,” and “Totsuzen no Okurimono” show how naturally she could move between intimate singer-songwriter writing, sophisticated pop, and jazz-informed arrangement. What makes MIGNONNE particularly interesting is its transitional quality: it still carries the warmth and studio richness of 1970s Japanese crossover music, while already pointing toward the cooler, more architectural sound Ohnuki would develop in the early 1980s.
