ABOUT THIS ALBUM

By the time Kazuhito Murata released My Crew in 1984, his sound had become noticeably tougher and more immediate. Unlike the carefully shaped studio atmosphere of his earlier work, this album places greater emphasis on the energy of the musicians around him, reflecting Murata’s growing confidence as both artist and producer. He took the producer’s chair himself, and that shift is audible in the more direct guitars, stronger rhythm tracks, and looser sense of ensemble movement. “We Love You,” “Gimme Rain,” and “Last Train” retain his instinct for polished melodic hooks, but the album repeatedly lets the band push harder than on the records that came before. The closing “Summer Vacation,” featuring Mariya Takeuchi, provides a softer counterweight and reconnects the album with Murata’s familiar seasonal imagery. My Crew is therefore an important transitional record: it preserves the coastal AOR warmth of his first two albums while giving the performances more physical presence. Rather than replacing polish with rawness, Murata finds a balance between FM-ready songwriting and the atmosphere of an active road band playing together.
