ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1984, AFTER 5 CLASH marks one of the clearest shifts in Toshiki Kadomatsu’s early catalog. His previous records had been strongly associated with summer, the sea, and resort imagery; here, the focus moves decisively toward the city after dark. The album is built around urban nightlife, with taut funk grooves, guitar cutting, slap bass, synthesizers, and AOR ballads all framed by a distinctly nocturnal atmosphere. “If You...” opens with immediate rhythmic force, while “Midnight Girl” shows the smoother side of Kadomatsu’s songwriting. Elsewhere, the bass-driven material highlights the musicianship that made his mid-1980s work so influential among later Japanese boogie and fusion listeners. What makes AFTER 5 CLASH especially important is that its concept is not only lyrical. The arrangements themselves feel designed around movement after working hours: traffic, clubs, fluorescent light, and compressed city energy.
