Released in 1990, ANGEL TOUCH sits just beyond the classic 1980s city-pop period, but its sound grows directly from the same network of Japanese studio musicians and sophisticated soul production. Cindy was already active as a songwriter and backing vocalist, including work with Miho Nakayama and Tatsuro Yamashita, and her second album places that experience at the center. “Tenshi no Kimochi” and “Destiny” are self-covers of songs she had written for Nakayama, while “Watashitachi wo Shinjiteite” became especially popular among Japanese groove and DJ listeners. The session lineup is exceptional: Hiroshi Narumi, Yuji Toriyama, Jun Aoyama, Tomohito Aoki, Takayuki Hijikata, Shigeoya Hamaguchi, and Tatsuro Yamashita are among the musicians connected with the album. Yet the record never feels like a showcase of famous names. Its strength is Cindy’s voice—smooth, technically controlled, and deeply rooted in R&B phrasing—set against quiet-storm keyboards, restrained funk rhythm, and polished synth-soul production.
