Released in 1986, COLOGNE became Kaoru Akimoto’s only solo album, yet its studio pedigree and remarkably focused sound have given it a much larger afterlife than its original profile might suggest. Produced by Akimoto with Satoshi Takebe, the record brings together musicians including Yuji Toriyama, Jun Aoyama, Hidefumi Toki, Chiharu Mikuzuki, and background vocalists such as Cindy and Toshinobu Kubota. “Dress Down,” arranged by Takebe, became the album’s defining track decades later, with its programmed rhythm, deep reverb, and relaxed vocal delivery fitting perfectly into the international rediscovery of Japanese boogie and future-funk culture. Yet COLOGNE is more varied than that one song suggests. “Wagamama na High Heel,” written and arranged by Toriyama, brings a brighter stepping groove, while compositions by Takao Kisugi, Minako Yoshida, and Kenjiro Sakiya broaden the album’s melodic range. Akimoto’s understated voice is crucial: she rarely pushes above the production, allowing the groove and harmonic detail to remain prominent. The result is one of the clearest late-eighties examples of Japanese urban funk built on restraint rather than excess.
