ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released as a modern 7-inch pairing in 2021, “Dress Down / Wagamama na High Heel” concentrates the two tracks most closely associated with the rediscovery of Kaoru Akimoto’s only solo album, Cologne. “Dress Down,” composed by Akihiko Matsumoto and arranged by Satoshi Takebe, is built on deep electronic rhythm, glassy synthesizers, restrained bass movement, and Akimoto’s cool, unforced delivery. Its atmosphere is less about dramatic melody than control and texture, which helps explain why it later became so compatible with future-funk edits, DJ sets, and online city-pop culture. “Wagamama na High Heel,” composed and arranged by Yuji Toriyama, approaches the same urban world from a lighter angle, using a swaying groove and brighter harmonic movement. Japanese reissue commentary has singled out both songs as key attractions of Cologne, especially the latter’s combination of electronic sound and light swing rhythm. Together they show why Akimoto’s voice works so well in this setting: she rarely overstates the song, leaving the production itself to create much of the nocturnal tension.
