Released in 1983, Hitokakera no Natsu is Kazuhito Murata’s second album and one of the records that most clearly established his coastal AOR identity. Tatsuro Yamashita produced the album throughout, bringing the same attention to vocal layering, rhythm placement, and guitar texture that defined his own early-1980s work. Murata’s songwriting, however, remains distinctly his own: sunnier, more open-road in character, and less densely urban than much of the city pop that surrounded it. “Ippon no Ongaku” and “Summer Dream” set out the album’s central language immediately—ringing guitars, carefully stacked harmonies, and a rhythm section that stays precise without sounding rigid. Across the record, bright arrangements are repeatedly balanced by a faint sense of summer ending, giving even the most optimistic songs an emotional afterglow. That mixture of technical studio polish and uncomplicated melodic warmth is what makes the album endure. Rather than merely imitating American West Coast AOR, Hitokakera no Natsu translates that vocabulary into a distinctly Japanese vision of travel, coastline, and seasonal memory.
