Released in 1982, FOR YOU stands at a turning point in Tatsuro Yamashita’s early career. Coming after the commercial success of RIDE ON TIME, it gave him room to refine the bright, densely layered sound that had been developing across his previous records. “SPARKLE” opens the album with one of the most recognizable guitar figures in Japanese pop, while “MUSIC BOOK,” “MORNING GLORY,” and “YOUR EYES” reveal how naturally Yamashita could move between funk, soul, pop, and AOR without losing cohesion.
