Released in 1984, BIG WAVE is one of the most unusual records in Tatsuro Yamashita’s catalog: an all-English album built from original songs and covers of American pop material, closely tied to the soundtrack of the surf film Big Wave. The first half gathers Yamashita originals including “The Theme from Big Wave,” “Jody,” “Only with You,” and “Magic Ways,” presenting his coastal pop writing in its most explicitly international form. The second half turns toward artists central to his musical education, especially the Beach Boys, with one-man multitrack vocal arrangements of songs such as “Girls on the Beach,” “Please Let Me Wonder,” and “Darlin’,” alongside “Guess I’m Dumb” and “This Could Be the Night.” The structure makes the album almost a conversation between Yamashita’s own songwriting and the American harmony-pop tradition that helped shape it. Despite its surf imagery, BIG WAVE is therefore less a simple summer soundtrack than a record about influence and translation. It shows Yamashita placing his own compositions beside the music he admired and demonstrating how thoroughly that language had become part of his own studio identity.
