Released in 1975, TROPICAL DANDY marks a decisive turn in Haruomi Hosono’s solo career and the beginning of the so-called tropical trilogy that would continue through Bon Voyage co. and PARAISO. Backed by musicians from the Caramel Mama/Tin Pan Alley circle, Hosono builds an imaginary port-city music from exotica, jazz, New Orleans rhythm, Chinese melodic references, old American popular song, and his own dry sense of humor. “Peking Duck,” “Hurricane Dorothy,” “Kinukaido,” and “Honey Moon” do not attempt to reproduce any single real musical tradition accurately. Instead, styles are deliberately displaced and recombined, as if different records from different countries had washed up in the same harbor. That approach became central to Hosono’s work: geography as imagination rather than documentary realism. The album is also historically important because this fascination with synthetic musical worlds would eventually lead toward PARAISO and then Yellow Magic Orchestra, where electronics replaced some of the acoustic travel fantasy with technological futurism. TROPICAL DANDY is therefore both playful roots pop and the beginning of a much larger conceptual journey.
