Released in 1976, SEYCHELLES was Masayoshi Takanaka’s first solo album after his work with the Sadistic Mika Band and immediately established the tropical language that would define much of his career. The core sessions feature musicians including Hiroshi Imai, Tsugutoshi Goto, Tatsuo Hayashi, and Shigeharu Mukaiya, with lyrics on several vocal pieces written by Yukihiro Takahashi. “Oh! Tengo Suerte,” “Tokyo Reggie,” “Funkee Mah-Chan,” and “Tropic Birds” already contain the combination that later became unmistakably Takanaka: bright, singing guitar lines, funk rhythm, Latin and reggae touches, and an almost cinematic sense of imaginary travel. One of the album’s most charming details is that the Seychelles function more as fantasy than documentary; contemporary reissue notes have pointed out that Takanaka had not actually visited the islands when he made the record. That distance may explain why the album feels so freely invented. Rather than reproducing a real tropical location, SEYCHELLES constructs one in the studio, using rhythm, melody, guitar tone, and playful arrangement to create a vivid musical landscape that helped shape Japan’s later fusion and resort-music aesthetics.
