Released in 1977, SPACY is where the lessons of Tatsuro Yamashita’s American-recorded debut were redirected into a more controlled Japanese studio environment. The result is denser, subtler, and more architecturally precise than CIRCUS TOWN. “LOVE SPACE” opens with a fluid blend of soul harmony and jazz-informed rhythm, while “CANDY,” “DANCER,” and “SOLID SLIDER” show Yamashita moving confidently between mellow songwriting and harder funk. The album’s title is appropriate: space itself becomes part of the arrangement, with vocal layers, keyboards, guitars, bass, and drums positioned carefully rather than simply stacked for impact. The rhythm section and harmony writing are sophisticated, but the record rarely feels showy; complexity is embedded in the way the parts interlock. Yamashita’s official discography describes SPACY as the work born from the know-how gained making his debut, and that progression is easy to hear.
