Released in 1979, MOONGLOW arrived just as Tatsuro Yamashita’s audience was beginning to expand beyond a small circle of dedicated listeners. The unexpected club success of “BOMBER” had confirmed the strength of his funk-oriented material, and MOONGLOW develops that rhythmic confidence without abandoning the softer harmony work central to his songwriting. “FUNKY FLUSHIN’” is the obvious dance-floor statement, but “Eien no Full Moon,” “Rainy Walk,” and “Touch Me Lightly” reveal a broader palette of soul, mellow pop, and late-night atmosphere. The album also marked a commercial and critical advance: it became a long seller and received a Best Album award at the Japan Record Awards. Musically, its significance lies in balance. Earlier records could feel deliberately eclectic, while MOONGLOW sounds more unified, with Yamashita increasingly able to make funk, ballad writing, layered vocals, and studio precision belong to the same world. It is the final major step before RIDE ON TIME, capturing the moment when his sound had fully matured even if his largest commercial breakthrough was still just ahead.
