Released in 1980, ON THE STREET CORNER 1 strips Tatsuro Yamashita’s music down to one of its deepest foundations: the sound of American doo-wop and street-corner vocal harmony. Rather than treating the project as a conventional covers album, Yamashita recorded the voices himself through extensive multitracking, building complete vocal groups from a single singer. Songs such as “You Belong to Me,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Most of All,” “Blue Velvet,” and “That’s My Desire” become demonstrations of both historical affection and studio technique. The album’s importance in Japan was unusually broad. Yamashita’s official site notes that terms such as “a cappella,” “doo-wop,” and one-man multitrack chorus entered wider Japanese public awareness partly through this release. The project also reveals why vocal arrangement is so central to his original recordings: the dense choruses heard on albums like FOR YOU were not decorative additions but the result of a deep study of 1950s and 1960s harmony groups. ON THE STREET CORNER 1 therefore feels simultaneously nostalgic and technically forward-looking—a private obsession transformed into a uniquely modern studio object.
