ANRI杏里
The groove turns sharper and more electronic as Anri moves through polished boogie, synth funk and late-night summer pop.
Released in June 1984, COOOL extends the creative partnership between Anri and Toshiki Kadomatsu that had already defined TIMELY!!. Kadomatsu produced and arranged the entire album, but COOOL feels slightly sleeker and more nocturnal than its predecessor, with a stronger emphasis on dance-floor rhythm, synthesizers, and after-dark atmosphere. “Bring Me to the Dancenight” sets that tone immediately, while “I Can’t Ever Change Your Love for Me,” “Silly City Girl,” “Surprise of Summer,” and “Flashin’ Night” show how comfortably the record moves between boogie, AOR, and polished pop. Anri also contributes her own compositions, preventing the album from feeling like a producer-led project in which the singer disappears behind the sound. Her clear, relaxed delivery is what keeps the dense arrangements light. Compared with TIMELY!!, which often evokes open-air summer brightness, COOOL feels more like neon reflected on glass: still seasonal and glamorous, but more urban and controlled. It captures Kadomatsu’s increasingly refined studio language while showing Anri moving confidently toward the center of 1980s Japanese city pop.
