ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1983, this single captures Anri at the exact point where mainstream television exposure and sophisticated studio pop intersected. Both “CAT’S EYE” and “Dancing with the Sunshine” were used for the television anime Cat’s Eye, with lyrics by Yoshiko Miura, music by Yuichiro Oda, and arrangements by Kazuo Otani. “CAT’S EYE” became one of Anri’s defining hits, built around a taut dance-pop pulse, bright synthesizers, clipped guitar, and a chorus designed for immediate impact. Its sleek surface fits the stylish visual world of the series unusually well. “Dancing with the Sunshine,” on the reverse, is slightly looser and warmer, giving Anri more room to lean into a softer groove while retaining the same polished early-eighties production language. Heard together, the two sides are a useful snapshot of the period immediately before TIMELY!!, when her sound was moving rapidly toward boogie and AOR while still operating comfortably inside commercial pop. The single shows how anime tie-in music could be musically sophisticated without sacrificing directness.
