ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in December 1983, TIMELY!! is one of the defining results of Anri’s collaboration with Toshiki Kadomatsu. After beginning their partnership on Bi・Ki・Ni, Kadomatsu took a much larger role here, producing the album and shaping most of its arrangements. His own circle of musicians also became central to the sound, including bassist Tomohito Aoki, whose playing gives many of the tracks their strong rhythmic identity. The album includes a newly arranged version of “CAT’S EYE,” as well as the major hit “Kanashimi ga Tomaranai,” but its reputation rests on more than the singles. “WINDY SUMMER,” “STAY BY ME,” and “DRIVING MY LOVE” reveal the balance that makes the record so effective: bright resort-pop surfaces supported by muscular boogie, funk, and polished studio playing. TIMELY!! is often described as breezy, but the precision underneath that lightness is what makes it endure. It is a particularly clear example of mainstream Japanese pop and serious studio groove meeting without compromise.
