Released in 1981, this single pairs two sides of Yasuha’s early style in unusually compact form. “Fly-Day Chinatown,” arranged by Nobuyuki Shimizu, has become one of the most internationally recognizable Japanese pop tracks of its era, built around a sharp opening figure, elastic bass movement, bright brass, and a rhythm that draws as much from disco and Latin-inflected pop as from conventional city pop. Its image of Chinatown at night adds to the song’s appeal, but the arrangement is what gives it lasting momentum: every element seems to push forward. “Morning Date,” on the reverse, provides a useful contrast. Softer and more relaxed, it shows how naturally Yasuha could shift from dramatic urban movement to lighter melodic pop without losing sophistication. Heard together, the two tracks reveal why her debut-period recordings remain so interesting. They combine strong commercial songwriting with studio arrangements sophisticated enough to reward close listening. For collectors, the single is particularly attractive because it isolates Yasuha’s best-known international track in its original early-1980s Japanese release context rather than as part of a later city-pop compilation.
