Makoto Matsushita’s 1981 debut FIRST LIGHT has one of the more unusual origin stories in Japanese AOR: the project grew out of demo recordings created while checking studio equipment. That technical beginning helps explain the finished album’s extraordinary sense of control. Matsushita was already an experienced guitarist and arranger, and the record is built around carefully placed harmony, precise rhythm playing, layered keyboards, and clean guitar work rather than flashy virtuosity. The result sits naturally between West Coast AOR, fusion, and urban Japanese pop. Songs such as “FIRST LIGHT” and “LAZY NIGHT” show different sides of the album, from luminous, open textures to more rhythmically intricate writing. Despite the sophistication of the production, the record was not a major commercial success at first. Its reputation grew slowly through reissues and word of mouth among musicians, AOR listeners, and collectors. Today, FIRST LIGHT is widely regarded as one of the key Japanese albums for listeners interested in studio craftsmanship, guitar arrangement, and the deeper AOR side of city pop.
