RIVER'S ISLAND

The group's second album deepens its coastal mythology: marine-blue romance, night flights and rain-lit harbours carried by Tetsuji Hayashi's immaculate melodic architecture.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1984, RIVER'S ISLAND is the second album by Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe and the point where the group’s resort-pop concept became more focused and recognizably urban. Tetsuji Hayashi remained central to the sound, composing and arranging the title track and helping refine the balance between clean guitar, bright keyboards, controlled rhythm sections, and Sugiyama’s cool vocal delivery. Compared with the more exploratory AQUA CITY, this album feels more confident about its identity: summer remains important, but the imagery shifts toward hotels, riversides, highways, and metropolitan romance rather than simple beach scenery. “RIVER'S ISLAND” and “Riverside Hotel” are especially important in defining that mood, while the rest of the album develops the polished AOR language that would soon reach its commercial peak on later releases. The restraint is key. Nothing is pushed too hard; the arrangements rely on clarity and distance, allowing Sugiyama’s voice to remain calm even when the rhythm becomes more active. RIVER'S ISLAND is where Omega Tribe’s imagined resort world begins to feel less like an idea and more like a complete sonic environment.
