ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in January 1984, “Kimi no Heart wa Marine Blue” was the third single by Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe and one of the clearest early statements of the group’s cool coastal identity. The A-side was written by Chinfa Kan, composed and arranged by Tetsuji Hayashi, whose polished production gives the song its characteristic balance of bright keyboards, clean guitar, controlled rhythm, and emotional distance. Sugiyama’s vocal never pushes too hard; that restraint allows the arrangement to carry the feeling of sea air, loneliness, and resort glamour without turning sentimental. The B-side, “Ai wo Maki Modoshite,” is notably different. Written by Yasushi Akimoto, composed by Sugiyama himself, and arranged by Kenzo Shiguma, it gives the single a more band-centered counterpoint to Hayashi’s highly refined A-side. That contrast makes the 45 especially revealing. Rather than representing a single producer’s vision, it shows the Omega Tribe project balancing outside songwriting with the group’s own musical contributions. Released just before RIVER’S ISLAND, the single helped define the sophisticated coastal-pop language the group would refine through 1984 and 1985.
