S. KIYOTAKA & OMEGA TRIBE杉山清貴&オメガトライブ
Clean guitars, layered keyboards and bittersweet summer melodies establish the coastal palette that made the original Omega Tribe unforgettable.
Released in September 1983, AQUA CITY was the first album by Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe and established much of the visual and musical language that would define the group. Their debut single “Summer Suspicion” appears here alongside “Midnight Down Town,” “Umikaze Tsushin,” “Transit in Summer,” and “Alone Again,” creating a world built around sea air, resort travel, night driving, and modern urban romance. Tetsuji Hayashi composed and arranged several of the album’s key songs, while Kiyotaka Sugiyama also contributed compositions of his own. In later reflections, Sugiyama and Hayashi described AQUA CITY as a comparatively simple, AOR-oriented record and a period when the group was still testing different directions before its sound became more elaborate on later albums. That exploratory quality is part of its charm. The arrangements are cleaner and less crowded than later Omega Tribe productions, leaving Sugiyama’s clear vocal tone plenty of space. Rather than pure beach music, AQUA CITY balances resort imagery with metropolitan distance, creating the cool, slightly detached atmosphere that became central to the group’s identity.
