ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1984, VARIETY marks the beginning of Mariya Takeuchi’s mature studio partnership with Tatsuro Yamashita. It was her first album for the Moon label, the first on which she wrote and composed every song herself, and the first to be fully produced and arranged by Yamashita. That combination gives the record an unusual sense of continuity: “Mou Ichido,” “Plastic Love,” “Honki de Only You,” and “Mersey Beat de Utawasete” move through sophisticated pop, doo-wop, soul, and polished dance music without losing Takeuchi’s melodic identity. “Plastic Love” later became the album’s international calling card, but within VARIETY it is only one part of a broader songwriting statement. The album also reached No. 1 on Japan’s weekly album chart, confirming Takeuchi’s return after stepping back from regular performing. Heard today, VARIETY is especially important because it captures the template that would define much of her later work: self-written songs, Yamashita’s meticulous production, and pop craft designed to age slowly rather than chase a single trend.
