Released in 1980, LOVE SONGS was Mariya Takeuchi’s third album and one of the records that established her as a major mainstream pop artist before the more self-directed songwriting era of VARIETY. The album contains two of her early signature singles, “SEPTEMBER” and “Fushigi na Peach Pie,” but its strength lies in the variety of writers and arrangers surrounding her. Rather than presenting one fixed production style, the record moves between bright pop, soft rock, AOR, and soul-inflected material while keeping Takeuchi’s clear, youthful vocal tone at the center. “Fly Away,” “Lonely Wind,” and “Koi no Owari ni” reveal a softer, more adult side than the hit singles suggest, while the overall production reflects the highly collaborative Japanese studio system of the period. In retrospect, LOVE SONGS is particularly interesting because it captures Takeuchi before she began writing every song herself. The album shows her interpreting the work of multiple composers with unusual consistency, developing the melodic control and phrasing that would later become central to her own songwriting. It reached No. 1 and confirmed that her appeal extended far beyond individual hit singles.
