Miki Matsubara’s 1980 debut album POCKET PARK is often approached through “Mayonaka no Door / Stay With Me,” but the record is much broader than its most famous song. Released when Matsubara was still nineteen, it places her unusually assured voice inside a polished mixture of AOR, funk, soft rock, and dance-oriented pop. Tetsuji Hayashi’s writing and arranging are central to the album’s character, while the rhythm team of Tatsuo Hayashi and Tsugutoshi Goto gives several tracks a supple, sophisticated groove. “It’s So Creamy” leans toward breezy AOR, “Cryin’” pairs sharp guitar cutting with a heavier brass-driven rhythm section, and “Trouble Maker” shows a tougher rock edge. That range matters because it explains why POCKET PARK works as an album rather than simply as the container for one global hit. Matsubara’s vocal control is the connecting thread: warm and relaxed on the softer material, but capable of real force when the arrangements open up. The result is an unusually confident debut that sits naturally at the intersection of Japanese pop and late-1970s American studio music.
