Released in 1980, SPECTRUM’s “F・L・Y” compresses the band’s extraordinary visual and musical ambition into a single piece of high-speed brass funk. Led by trumpeter and vocalist Ichiro Nitta, SPECTRUM combined influences from American soul, funk, brass rock, and fusion with unusually theatrical staging, falsetto vocals, and tightly drilled 16-beat rhythm. “F・L・Y” is a particularly concentrated example: the horn writing is dense but sharply organized, bass and drums maintain a disciplined funk pulse, and the unusually high vocal line gives the track a futuristic, almost unreal character. The song originally appeared on the band’s 1980 second album Spectrum 2: Optical Sunrise, but its story did not end there. More than four decades later, the track unexpectedly found a huge international audience through short-form videos featuring nostalgic games and animation; by early 2025, videos using the song had accumulated more than 100 million views. That revival makes “F・L・Y” a fascinating example of how highly specific Japanese studio music can gain an entirely new cultural context decades after release without changing a note.
