Released in August 1987, REQUEST is built around one of Mariya Takeuchi’s most effective concepts: songs she had written for other singers, reclaimed and reinterpreted in her own voice, alongside several of her own recent recordings. “Kenka wo Yamete,” originally written for Naoko Kawai, “Genki wo Dashite,” associated with Hiroko Yakushimaru, and “Iro White Blend,” written for Miho Nakayama, are transformed from commissioned pop songs into part of Takeuchi’s own personal repertoire. “Eki” became one of the album’s defining performances, while “Yume no Tsuzuki” and “Koi no Arashi” reinforce the record’s adult-pop atmosphere. Tatsuro Yamashita’s arrangements give the album remarkable continuity, tying together material written for different singers and different contexts through polished AOR, vocal layering, and controlled rhythm sections. REQUEST reached No. 1 and eventually became a million seller, but its deeper importance lies in how clearly it established Takeuchi not only as a performer but as a songwriter whose compositions could survive a change of voice, arrangement, and perspective.
