Released in 1986, ADVENTURE is Momoko Kikuchi’s third original album and one of the clearest examples of Tetsuji Hayashi’s highly polished mid-1980s pop production. Hayashi composed and arranged every track, giving the record a remarkably unified sound even though several lyricists contributed. Rather than relying on dense arrangements, the album often leaves space around Kikuchi’s light, breathy vocal tone, using synthesizers, clean guitar, programmed rhythm, and carefully layered backing parts to create a soft-focus atmosphere. “Mou Aenai Kamoshirenai” provides one of the album’s strongest melodic anchors, while “Night Cruising” pushes the record toward a more nocturnal, urban mood. The title track and “Mystical Composer” reveal the album’s more cinematic side, where the production becomes almost weightless. ADVENTURE is especially interesting because it blurs the line between idol pop and what overseas listeners now group with city pop: the songs remain direct and accessible, but the harmonic detail and studio precision are far more sophisticated than the category “idol album” might suggest.
