Released in 1986, POCKET MUSIC captures Tatsuro Yamashita in the middle of a technological transition that was changing the way records were made. Yamashita has described this period as a struggle with digital recording and computer-based production, and that tension is audible throughout the album. Compared with the warmer analog density of FOR YOU or MELODIES, these songs often feel more controlled, inward, and carefully constructed. “Kaze no Corridor,” “Doyobi no Koibito,” “Mermaid,” and the title track combine programmed elements with Yamashita’s familiar vocal layering, guitar detail, and melodic precision, but the mood is more reflective than celebratory. Even the brighter tracks carry a certain sense of restraint. What makes POCKET MUSIC especially interesting is that the technology never becomes the subject by itself; Yamashita uses new tools to rethink space, rhythm, and arrangement rather than simply to sound modern. The result is one of his most intellectually focused albums, documenting the difficult but productive moment when his studio craft moved decisively from the analog seventies and early eighties into the digital era.
