ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1983, MELODIES was Tatsuro Yamashita’s first album for the Moon label and the beginning of a new production period after his RCA/AIR years. Rather than simply repeating the bright, rhythm-heavy formula of FOR YOU, Yamashita deliberately broadened the album’s emotional and sonic range. “Kokiatsu Girl” carries forward his gift for sunlit, rhythmically buoyant pop, while “Merry-Go-Round,” “Blue Midnight,” and “Jody” move into darker or more reflective territory. The record’s most consequential song, however, was “Christmas Eve.” Built with meticulous vocal layering and a structure that combines contemporary pop craft with Yamashita’s fascination with older harmony traditions, it would eventually become one of Japan’s most enduring seasonal recordings. What makes MELODIES particularly interesting is that this famous song emerged from an album defined by transition rather than calculation. Yamashita’s official discography describes the record as a major change in direction from the RCA/AIR period, and that willingness to change is precisely what gives the album its breadth. It marks the beginning of the mature Moon-era sound that would shape the next decade of his work.
