Released in February 1985, COMMUNICATION opened a new chapter for Junko Yagami as her first album for the Moon label. The record moves decisively toward the electronic boogie and synth-pop language of the mid-1980s, with arrangers including Shiro Sagisu, Ken Yajima, and Masaaki Omura helping shape a sharper, more machine-driven sound than much of her earlier work. “Cheater” became one of the album’s key songs, while the title track underlines how directly the project engaged with dance-floor production. Elsewhere, tracks such as “Imagination,” “Miss D.J.,” and “Reaching Out” place Yagami’s clear, powerful vocal delivery against synthesizers, programmed textures, and more aggressive rhythmic framing. What keeps the album from becoming merely an exercise in period technology is Yagami herself: her phrasing remains melodic and controlled even when the production becomes hard-edged. COMMUNICATION is a useful document of Japanese pop adapting to the global electronic shift of the mid-1980s while retaining the songwriting discipline that had defined Yagami’s earlier career.
