Released as a single in 1985, “Plastic Love” was originally drawn from Mariya Takeuchi’s 1984 album VARIETY, but its later history became far larger than its initial chart performance. Written and composed by Takeuchi and arranged by Tatsuro Yamashita, the track combines a restrained disco pulse, elastic bass, clipped guitar, keyboards, horns, and carefully layered backing vocals into one of the clearest examples of Japanese urban dance-pop from the period. Takeuchi’s lyric presents nightlife as emotional camouflage: dancing, drinking, and city movement are used to avoid confronting the end of a relationship. That contrast between polished groove and emotional detachment became central to the song’s later appeal. Decades afterward, uploads and algorithmic discovery introduced “Plastic Love” to an enormous international audience and helped turn it into a symbolic track of the city-pop revival. Paired here with “Mou Ichido,” the single also reconnects that famous song with the broader VARIETY era rather than treating it as an isolated internet phenomenon. For collectors, the pairing captures the moment when Takeuchi and Yamashita’s studio partnership had reached a particularly refined balance of songwriting, rhythm, and production.
