ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Hiroshi Sato’s 1982 album Awakening was created after a period of musical activity in Los Angeles, and the West Coast influence is woven deeply into its sound. Sato had spent years as a keyboard player, arranger, and session musician, but on this album he used then-new technology to build something unusually self-contained and modern. The Linn drum machine is central to the production, yet the record never feels mechanical; programmed rhythm, keyboards, layered vocals, and soft soul harmonies are shaped into a warm, fluid atmosphere. Canadian vocalist Wendy Matthews appears prominently, adding another international dimension to the album, while guitarists including Tatsuro Yamashita, Tsunehide Matsuki, and Yuji Toriyama contribute color without disturbing its spaciousness. The recurring use of wave sounds reinforces the album’s sense of distance and open air. Awakening is often placed within city pop, but its identity is broader: part mellow soul, part electronic AOR, part private studio experiment. That borderless quality is a major reason the album continues to influence musicians and collectors.
