ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1982, YOSHINO FUJIMAL places guitarist Fujimaru Yoshino at the center of the polished AOR and studio-funk world he had already helped build as a session musician. The album’s sound is broader than a conventional guitarist-led project: “Who Are You?,” “Midnight Plus 1,” “One Shot Lady,” and “Free Way 5 to South” combine clean rhythm guitar, muscular bass, layered keyboards, and harmony-rich choruses with the scale of American West Coast AOR. The second side continues that balance through “Girl’s in Love with Me,” “Shang-Hide Night,” and “Pretender,” where arrangement and ensemble discipline matter as much as guitar technique. Yoshino’s strength lies precisely in that lack of self-indulgence. Rather than filling every gap with lead lines, he treats guitar as part of the architecture of the song. That studio-first mentality points directly toward AB’S, the group he would soon help form with other elite Japanese session players. YOSHINO FUJIMAL is therefore both a strong solo AOR record and a document of the highly interconnected musician network that powered Japan’s early-eighties studio scene.
