CASIOPEAカシオペア
Recorded live and refined in the studio, MINT JAMS captures Casiopea’s astonishing precision without losing the electricity of performance.
CASIOPEA’s 1982 MINT JAMS occupies an unusual space between a live album and a studio document. The performances were recorded live, yet the presentation is so controlled—and the audience presence so minimized—that the record can initially sound like an exceptionally vivid studio session. That ambiguity is part of its legend. The classic lineup of Issei Noro, Minoru Mukaiya, Tetsuo Sakurai, and Akira Jimbo revisits material such as “Take Me,” “Asayake,” “Midnight Rendezvous,” “Domino Line,” and “Swear” with extraordinary precision, but the attraction is not technical display alone. The rhythm section remains elastic, Noro’s guitar cutting is remarkably clean, and Mukaiya’s keyboards add both harmonic density and playful detail. The album’s compact seven-track sequence also gives it unusual momentum, moving without excess despite the musicians’ obvious virtuosity. MINT JAMS works because it captures the speed and tension of live performance while preserving the clarity, balance, and repeatability usually associated with studio production, making it one of the most internationally admired documents of Japanese jazz fusion.
