ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in April 1975, SONGS is the only studio album by Sugar Babe, yet its influence reaches far beyond the group’s short existence. Issued as the first release on Eiichi Ohtaki’s Niagara label, the album brought together Tatsuro Yamashita, Taeko Ohnuki, Kunio Muramatsu, and their bandmates at a time when sophisticated Japanese pop built from soul, soft rock, and American harmony music was still far from the mainstream. “DOWN TOWN” became the record’s most enduring song, but tracks such as “SHOW,” “Itsumo Dori,” “Ame wa Tenohira ni Ippai,” and “Sutekina Melody” reveal a much wider musical language. Yamashita’s rhythmic guitar and harmony instincts are already recognizable, while Ohnuki’s compositions point toward the restrained, harmonically sophisticated writing of her later solo work. The production can sound modest compared with the elaborate studio records both artists would make later, but that relative simplicity is part of its historical value. SONGS captures the moment before city pop had a name, when a small group of musicians were quietly building many of the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic ideas that would define Japanese urban pop in the following decade.
