TOMOKO ARAN亜蘭知子
A sought-after modern 7-inch cut pairing two highlights from Fuyū Kūkan: nocturnal restraint on the A-side and luminous urban groove on the reverse.
Issued as a 7-inch pairing in 2022, “Midnight Pretenders / I’m in Love” brings together the two tracks that have come to define Tomoko Aran’s international rediscovery. Both originate from her 1983 album Fuyū-Kūkan, yet they reveal different sides of that record’s carefully controlled urban atmosphere. “Midnight Pretenders” is nocturnal and restrained, built from clipped guitar, soft synthesizer color, a patient rhythm section, and Aran’s cool, almost detached vocal delivery. Its global profile expanded dramatically when The Weeknd sampled it for “Out of Time,” bringing Aran’s work into a contemporary pop context far beyond the Japanese collector market. “I’m in Love” is warmer and more luminous, with a softer groove that has developed an international following of its own through streaming, television placement, and online discovery. Warner Music Japan has specifically highlighted both songs as major examples of the album’s overseas popularity. Heard together on a compact 45, they explain why Fuyū-Kūkan has become such a central record in the global reappraisal of early-eighties Japanese pop.
