Hitomi Tohyama’s 1983 album SEXY ROBOT is one of the clearest Japanese examples of early-eighties boogie colliding with new electronic studio technology. Produced by Hikaru “Flash” Kanematsu, the record combines programmed rhythm and synthesizer-heavy production with a formidable group of live musicians, including Kazuo Shiina, Makoto Matsushita, Hiroyuki Namba, Hideo Yamaki, and Jake H. Concepcion. That hybrid approach gives the album its character: electronic rhythm provides a hard, modern frame, but guitars, bass, keyboards, horns, and Tohyama’s bilingual vocal presence keep the music physical and human. The title track is the obvious statement piece, yet songs such as “Wanna Kiss,” “Behind You,” and “Cathy” show how broadly the production moves across electro-funk, urban soul, and Japanese boogie. Tohyama’s voice is crucial because she sounds completely comfortable inside the technology rather than overwhelmed by it. Decades later, “Cathy” and other tracks found new audiences through online rediscovery and DJ culture. SEXY ROBOT now feels like a snapshot of Japanese studios discovering a new rhythmic future in real time.
