ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Released in 1982, LIGHT'N UP places Minako Yoshida at the center of an unusually international studio project. The core tracks were recorded in Tokyo with musicians including Tsunehide Matsuki, Takayuki Hijikata, Akira Okazawa, Yuichi Togashiki, Haruo Togashi, and Hiroshi Sato, before additional work was carried out in New York. There, the album gained horn and string colors from players and arrangers associated with the city’s jazz and soul scene, including the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, and Leon Pendarvis. That combination gives the record its scale: Japanese rhythm-section precision meets the brighter, more forceful attack of New York horns. The title track is a prime example, moving with the confidence of a club record while remaining harmonically sophisticated. Elsewhere, “Reflection” and “Love Shower” reveal Yoshida’s gift for balancing soul phrasing with highly detailed arrangement. LIGHT'N UP is important because it does not simply imitate American funk or soul; it absorbs those sounds into Yoshida’s own writing and production language, producing something distinctly Japanese but internationally fluent.
