Released in 1977, TWILIGHT ZONE is one of Minako Yoshida’s most ambitious early albums and a major example of how soul, jazz-funk, and Japanese studio pop were beginning to expand into longer, more cinematic forms. Co-produced with Tatsuro Yamashita, the record gives Yoshida’s songwriting unusually broad arrangements, allowing rhythm sections, brass, keyboards, and layered vocals to develop with more space than on conventional pop recordings. “Koi wa Ryusei” is the most immediate example, driven by a bright horn arrangement and one of Yoshida’s most commanding performances, while “Uptown,” “Raspberry Slope,” and the title pieces reveal a darker, more atmospheric side. The album’s structure is important: the opening “Twilight Zone (Overture)” and closing title track give the record an almost suite-like frame, making it feel designed as a complete listening experience rather than a collection of singles. Yoshida’s control is equally striking. She can move from powerful soul delivery to restrained phrasing without losing intensity, giving TWILIGHT ZONE a depth that remains distinctive even within Japan’s exceptionally rich late-1970s studio scene.
