Released in 1982, WEEKEND FLY TO THE SUN is Toshiki Kadomatsu’s second album and an important early stage in the coastal, rhythm-conscious style he would refine throughout the decade. Compared with the stronger urban-night identity of AFTER 5 CLASH, this record still belongs firmly to Kadomatsu’s early world of summer travel, open roads, resorts, and escape from the city. The production draws from AOR, funk, boogie, and West Coast pop, but the rhythmic detail already points toward the harder groove of his later work. Guitar cutting, electric piano, bass, percussion, and bright backing vocals create a sense of constant movement, giving the album the feeling of a weekend already in progress rather than a static beach postcard. Kadomatsu’s songwriting is also becoming more confident: melody and rhythm are increasingly treated as equal elements, with the groove often carrying as much narrative weight as the lyrics. WEEKEND FLY TO THE SUN documents Kadomatsu learning how to turn coastal imagery into a complete production language—one that would soon evolve from daylight and resort fantasy into the neon, funk-driven city sound of his mid-eighties records.
