THE ARTIST
The story
behind the sound.
Miki Matsubara arrived in 1979 with Mayonaka no Door — Stay With Me, a debut single whose jazz-informed phrasing and immediate hook would become central to City Pop’s international revival. Her albums reveal far more than one anthem: supple vocals, playful timing and an ease with jazz, soul and metropolitan pop. She died in 2004, but her recordings continue to introduce new listeners to the depth of the era.
