A singular writer whose quiet precision expanded the emotional and harmonic language of City Pop.
THE ARTIST
The story
behind the sound.
Taeko Ohnuki began with Sugar Babe in 1973 before launching a solo career that continually expanded the possibilities of Japanese pop. SUNSHOWER brought jazz harmony and restless rhythm into dialogue with songwriting; MIGNONNE and CLICHÉ moved toward elegant orchestration, European colour and electronic restraint. Her catalogue is less a fixed City Pop formula than a lifelong practice of refinement and reinvention.

Ohnuki’s restraint is magnetic. Every space, chord and softly delivered phrase feels intentional.
