THE ARTIST
The story
behind the sound.
Lyricist and singer Tomoko Aran built a compact but distinctive recording legacy at the meeting point of pop, new wave and studio dreamscape. Her 1983 album FUYŪ-KŪKAN, created with key figures from Japan’s rock and electronic scenes, turned synthetic space and cool vocal distance into something cinematic. Midnight Pretenders later found a global second life, drawing listeners back into the album’s stranger and more atmospheric world.

DRAG TO EXPLORE →WHY WE LOVE TOMOKO ARAN
There is mystery in the negative space. Aran’s records feel less like period pieces than private worlds.
