Mariya Takeuchi debuted in 1978 and quickly established herself as a writer with an instinct for memorable melody and emotionally exact storytelling. After stepping away from the spotlight, she returned with VARIETY in 1984, a self-written landmark produced by Tatsuro Yamashita. Plastic Love later carried her voice to a new global audience, but her deeper catalogue reveals an unusually consistent portrait of adult life, distance and desire.
