Released in 1979, LATE LATE SUMMER is the first of Bread & Butter’s celebrated Alfa-era albums and one of the clearest Japanese interpretations of West Coast soft rock and coastal AOR from the late seventies. The record is supported by an exceptional studio circle that includes Haruomi Hosono, Tatsuo Hayashi, Shigeru Suzuki, Hiroshi Sato, and other musicians closely connected with Japan’s emerging city-pop and fusion scene. Hosono’s arrangements are particularly important on tracks such as “Summer Blue,” where the rhythm section remains relaxed but never loose, giving the music a gentle forward motion that suits Bread & Butter’s understated harmonies. Elsewhere, “Julianne” and “Yuuutsu” show how comfortably the brothers could move between mellow pop, soft rock, and more sophisticated studio writing. The album’s strength is restraint. Rather than chasing the larger, brighter sound that would dominate many 1980s city-pop records, LATE LATE SUMMER works through acoustic space, subtle rhythm, and close vocal harmony. It captures the feeling of summer not at its peak but just after it, when warmth remains but the season is already beginning to fade.
