Released in 1981, BGM is where Yellow Magic Orchestra deliberately stepped away from the polished brightness that had made SOLID STATE SURVIVOR so successful. The music becomes colder, denser, and more fractured, reflecting a group increasingly interested in texture, studio process, and emotional distance rather than simple pop immediacy. “Ballet,” “Music Plans,” and “Cue” retain strong melodic identities, but their surfaces are rougher and more ambiguous. “Rap Phenomena” plays with speech and rhythm, while “1000 Knives” revisits Ryuichi Sakamoto’s earlier composition in a more severe electronic setting. The album is also important technologically: digital recording, sequencers, drum machines, and emerging sampling techniques become part of the composition itself rather than invisible production tools. Compared with the clean symmetry of YMO’s breakthrough period, BGM often feels deliberately unstable. That shift is exactly why the record became so influential. It shows the group refusing to repeat a successful formula and instead moving toward a darker electronic language that anticipated later developments in industrial pop, new wave, electro, and experimental synth music.
