Released in 1983, POINT ZERO places Junko Ohashi inside a distinctly international studio environment. Recorded in Los Angeles with American session musicians, the album gives her already powerful soul voice a wider, more polished setting built from funk rhythm, AOR keyboards, clean guitar, and spacious West Coast production. “Dancin’” and “In Your Lovin’” lead with tightly controlled groove, while “Can’t Get Enough,” “Firefly,” “Caught in a Shower,” and “Sensual Night” extend the record into smoother late-night territory. What makes the album especially effective is the contrast between Ohashi’s vocal force and the restraint of the backing tracks. The musicians rarely overplay; bass, drums, keys, and guitar leave enough room for her phrasing to become the main source of drama. That balance separates POINT ZERO from both the band-oriented funk of her earlier Minoya period and the more synthetic Japanese boogie sound that would soon become common. It is an album built on trans-Pacific studio language, but Ohashi’s presence prevents it from sounding anonymous. Her delivery gives the polished Los Angeles setting a distinctly personal weight.
