Released in 1981, NATURAL WOMAN is Yumi Seino’s second album and one of the quieter, more refined examples of Japanese urban pop from the period. Its song titles alone suggest a carefully constructed evening itinerary: “Airport 4:30 P.M.,” “Summer Hotel,” “Sky Restaurant,” “Tokyo City Nights,” and “Midnight Blue” move through airports, restaurants, hotels, and late-night city spaces rather than the more obvious beach or resort imagery associated with much early-eighties city pop. That sense of movement gives the album an unusually cinematic character. The arrangements favor clean rhythm sections, soft electric keyboards, restrained guitar, and spacious production, leaving Seino’s calm vocal delivery at the center. She rarely pushes dramatically; instead, the album builds atmosphere through understatement. “You & I” and “Caledonia Love Day” establish the elegant tone, while the second side becomes increasingly nocturnal. NATURAL WOMAN is especially rewarding for listeners who prefer the adult-pop and AOR side of Japanese studio music: less about big hooks or flashy funk, more about sequencing, mood, and the feeling of moving through the city after dark.
